Which kind of information can be stored using a .tel domain?
- Contact info: phone number, mobile, fax, e-mail, VoIP, skype, support or sales hotlines, emergency hotlines etc.
- Content links: to websites, FTP sites, blogs, wiki, FAQ etc.
- Navigation links for companies with multiple locations or brands; will navigate the user to the contact information for the appropriate location or brand
- Geolocation: geographic coordinates that link to online route planners or as destination input for car navigation systems
- Indexable text: keywords or additional information which help to locate contact records in the .tel directory (similar to a global yellow pages directory)
All of this data is stored directly on the nameserver for this domain and made available through the domain name system (DNS). To enable this functionality, .tel domains may use only special nameservers which have been certified by the .tel registry. With “TelHosting”, EPAG offers a free nameserver service that meets the requirements.
The purpose of .tel is not to operate HTTP websites. Browsing to e.g. www.telnic.tel will lead you to a site that displays all contact information which is stored for telnic.tel.
