.net - one of the first and most successful top-level domains
In the early years of the Internet .net domains were mainly registered by providers of network and telecommunication services. These restictions have already become history - today .net is the fourth most registered top-level domain worldwide and is used by private persons and organisations.
Nevertheless .net domains are still used for name servers (e.g. dns1.epag.net). One of the reasons might be the huge investments of the .net registry to assure an availability of almost 100% of their own DNS infrastructure. Many big telecommunication providers as well as NGOs and administration offices use .net as a complement or alternative to a .com domain.
It is possible to register domain names with only two characters under .net. Thus .net is silhouetted against the bigger part of the other TLDs.
